Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleeping disorder that can cause patients to experience interruptions in breathing as they rest. For patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea, it is considered a serious condition that can lead to health problems, including high blood pressure, strokes, heart disease, and even death. Snoring is a common symptom with obstructive sleep apnea. If you snore loudly or wake up frequently during the night, it is important to see a primary physician or sleep doctor to rule out obstructive sleep apnea. Patients with sleep apnea are often prescribed a CPAP machine to maintain an open airway at night. However, it is large and often uncomfortable to wear. At Huntington Dental Excellence we offer an alternative to a CPAP machine where indicated.
Oral appliance therapy, or OAT, is a way of treating a condition like obstructive sleep apnea while avoiding the use of a CPAP machine. These machines can be expensive to purchase and are also challenging to travel with. They require an outlet to work and distilled water, which can be hard to find when traveling or camping. Oral appliance therapy is simple, allowing patients to wear a comfortable device in the mouth to achieve the same results as CPAP use. In fact, doctors find that patients using oral appliance therapy instead of the CPAP machine are often more compliant in using the treatment and achieving a better quality of life.
In collaboration with ProSomnus Sleep Technologies we offer a custom-made mouthpiece that fits over the teeth to keep the airway open during sleep.
ProSomnus has been clinically proven to be effective in treating sleep apnea and snoring and is FDA cleared for use in adults.
